KMH Provides Multipurpose Vessel (MPV) Controls Upgrade
March 21, 2009: The scope of this project included the replacement of existing Copper/Nickel Smelter MPV relay/DCS based hybrid burner management system (BMS) with a PLC based system. As well, new instrumentation was added in order to conform to the requirements of CSA-B149.3-05 and NFPA 86 standards, the final product was a TSSA (Technical Safety and Standards Association, Ontario) approved BMS. The existing field junction boxes that marshal the field instrumentation were retained, however they were retrofitted with new terminal block assemblies. Existing obsolete cabling between the junction boxes and the DCS were identified, disconnected and removed. The existing field cabling between the junction boxes and instrumentation was retained and re-terminated to the new terminal blocks. New trunk cables were installed between the junction boxes and the new PLC based BMS. The new PLC was networked with the existing DCS to provide operator control of the MPV burner systems. A new network integration cabinet was installed and new redundant DCS gateway modules were installed in the existing DCS/PLC communication cabinet to provide the connectivity between the PLC and the DCS. A new cable tray system was installed to provide a cable path between the four (4) MPV’s and the Casting Switchroom.
