Profiles

High Voltage Substation Design

KMH has experience in providing detailed design for upgrades and modifications to high voltage substations of up to 230 kV including high and medium voltage switchgear, transformers, metering, grounding, buswork, and cabling. Deliverables would include updated relaying and metering single lines, 3-line AC schematics, DC schematics, point-to-point wiring drawings, panel layouts, general arrangements, grounding layouts, cable tray layouts, cable schedules, bills of material, construction specifications, relay settings and narratives, and commissioning checklists. Also included in our services are civil/structural engineering services.

Transmission and Distribution Line Design

KMH has experience in design of wood pole transmission line up to 115 kV and overhead distribution lines up to 44 kV. PLS-CADD software is utilized where applicable for sag and tension calculations, line profiles, and pole spotting. Appropriate design standards are applied as required.

Unit Substation Design

KMH has provided engineering design services to install new unit substations of up to 10 MVA with primary voltage of up to 13.8 kV. Deliverables included updated realaying and metering single lines, 3-line AC schematics, DC schematics, point-to-point wiring drawings, panel layouts, general arrangment drawings, grounding layouts, cable tray layouts, cable schedules, bills of material, construction specifications, relay settings and narratives, and commissioning checklists.

Mining Industry Power Transmission and Distribution

KMH Engineering is currently contracted to supply detailed electrical design for a mining client who is installing a new headframe and hoist house for an underground mine. Included in the scope of design is an extension of a 115 KV transmission line, installation of a 115 kV SF6 circuit breaker, two 20 MVA main substation transformers and a 13.8KV switchear building. Additional engineering design includes new 13.8 KV underground substations and a site surface power distribution system comprised of a variety of 5KV switchgear and 600 Volt distribution hardware contained in Hoist House and Headframe complexes. The auxiliary equipment design for these complexes completes the engineering deliverables.

Electrical Energy Audits

KMH has experience in completing detailed electrical energy audits of large industrial facilities in order to uncover potential areas for energy efficiency improvements. Audits include a review of motors, drives, lighting, power metering, and major electrical equipment operation. Process trends and electrical loads are analyzed to locate potential areas for improvements in electrical energy efficiency. Capital cost estimates and pay back calculations are completed for proposed equipment and process modifications such as variable speed drive installations.

Terrace Bay Pulp Steam Turbine Generator

Terrace Bay Pulp purchased a previously installed Shin Nippon 25 Megawatt back-pressure steam turbine, an ABB generator, and auxiliary support equipment, including a turbine control panel, a generator protection panel, and field instrumentation. KMH Engineering conducted a power system short circuit study and provided a detailed design to accommodate the connection of the new generator to the plant power system. KMH Engineering also acted as the technical liaison with the local electrical authorities for the application, testing, and approval phases of the generator connection to the plant power grid. Additionally, a plant power system control panel was designed, fabricated and delivered from the KMH Engineering panel fabrication shop. During the turbine mechanical installation phase, KMH Engineering was contracted to review the available documentation and to provide a new installation design using the purchased components. The major components of the system included an Allen-Bradley Controllogix PLC, a Woodward 505E governor controller, and a Bentley Nevada 3500 condition monitoring system. The installation design integrated the auxiliary equipment, turbine monitoring and supervisory controls into the plant ABB INFI 90 DCS Distributed control system. All of the required technical installation assistance and commissioning and start-up support was also provided as part of the complete package.

Zellstoff-Celgar Steam Turbine Generator

Zellstoff-Celgar purchased a new Shin Nippon 48 Megawatt condensing steam turbine, a Brush generator complete with a generator protection panel, and auxiliary equipment from Shin Nippon Manufacturing. The equipment supply did not include an OEM turbine control system package, and KMH Engineering was contracted to design a fully integrated control system hardware installation  based on an ABB INFI 90 DCS platform. The design package included all facets of the turbine and generator controls installation, with focus on P&I drawing development, system control philosophy and logic, and all field instrumentation sizing and specifications. The delivery of the design was further supported with technical installation supervision support to ensure that the project time lines remained intact.
